January 2020 Newsletter

The DSA aim to ensure that all fans have their best matchday experience, and we act as the link between the disabled fans and the club. We are happy that this season we have helped one of our members change seats to somewhere that is far easier for him to manage, have helped one of our DSA members who was struggling to get tickets, and have helped one of our DSA members with disabled parking. We are grateful to the different departments within the club for their help in ensuring these queries can be rectified. Diolch.

As a DSA, we are proud that our members regard us as “one big happy family” and that our events are the “only events that we are able to attend and be included as much as you do.” We are all volunteers, and are an independent organisation, and our aim is to bring together disabled supporters along with their family and friends by organising social events so that our members can come along and feel included and involved.

Your 2019/2020 DSA Committee

Chair – Andrew Brayley, Vice Chair – Michelle Preece, Treasurer – Malcolm Fearn, Secretary – Cath Dyer, Committee members – Lesley Williams, Cath Williams, Andrew Williams, Clare Lewis, Lee Ellery and Nicola Dyer.

We are pleased that we have a great relationship with the club, and regularly meet with Cath Thomas, Head of Hospitality, and Mark Phillips, DAO, where we discuss club and DSA ideas.

First Social Event of the Season

Our first social event this season was held on Monday September 30th. Eirian Wyn was our MC for the evening and did a fantastic job. Diolch Eirian.

We were thrilled when Steve Cooper kindly called into see everyone at the start of the evening and spent some time chatting with our DSA members.

Our panel consisted of – Trevor Birch, Alan Tate, Lee Trundle, Tom Carroll and Freddie Woodman who entertained all our 104 members. Thanks to the club for providing the refreshments.

Macmillan Coffee Morning 2019

The DSA held a Macmillan coffee morning on Friday 27th September 2019 at the Liberty stadium and raised a fantastic amount of £200. Thanks to all who came along and supported our event, which we are hoping will become an annual event.

Sensory Room

The club and DSA have worked in partnership to successfully launch a pop-up sensory room at the Liberty which was launched on October 1st.

Booking details can be found via Swansea City AFC Sensory room. We would like to see the room being used to its maximum.

Lanyards

The DSA are extremely grateful to Trevor Birch and his team for kindly purchasing DSA lanyards for our DSA committee.

Here are our committee proudly wearing our lanyards, which we hope will help our members recognize us at our events.

At the time of printing, our DSA lifetime president, Kev Johns, is hard at work in pantomime. Hope all is going well.

Question of Sport 2019

The DSA had 2 tables at the club’s “Question of Sport “event at the Liberty on December 5th, and one of our DSA sponsors, Dawsons, came along and joined in the fun. Everyone had a great night.

Mr X Appeal 2019

This year the DSA supported the Mr X appeal, which kindly supports underprivileged children in the South Wales area.

The DSA committee, members and friends, were proud to be able to donate 60 gift bags towards this fantastic appeal. Thank you everyone.

DSA secretary Cath Dyer and membership Secretary Nicola Dyer, visited Watford FC in September, They met with Dave Messenger, Supporter Liaison and Disability Access Officer at the club who gave them an informative tour of the sensory room and the ground. It was interesting to see the same widget used there as the DSA also use.

Our Christmas event on 17th December, was attended by over 150 of our members.

Our special guests were Trevor Birch, Steve Cooper, Leon Britton, Lee Trundle, Matt Grimes, Ben Wilmot and Yan Dhanda. We also had special appearances from Cyril and Cybil, plus Santa who handed out gifts for everyone. The evening was compered by Eirian Wyn.

Christmas Event 2019

Thank you so much to everyone who donated a raffle prize that evening. We had a quiet auction, and special thanks must go to LETOU who donated an Inter Milan shirt, the FAW for a signed Wales ball, Morgans’ hotel for their voucher of an overnight stay, Mike Evans for a signed printed photo of the Liberty, plus Nicola Thomas for numerous hampers.

The evening was kindly sponsored by Green Hat Construction Ltd. Thank you once again to the club for providing the refreshments.

DSA Lifetime President

Tonight the Swans DSA are proud to announce that Kevin Johns MBE has agreed to become our Lifetime president.

Swansea City has always been a family club, as a DSA we feel that Kev fits that mould perfectly.  Kev has always supported the DSA, he has both the community, the city and the club at his heart. When considering the role the decision was certainly unanimous.

Kev’s character and reputation will help spread the message of the DSA to Swansea City supporters to ensure the best match day experience for all disabled fans, both home and away.

DSA AGM 2017- Tuesday the 11th of July

The Disabled Supporters Association (DSA) will hold their Annual General Meeting (AGM) on: Tuesday, July 11th at 5.30pm at the Liberty Stadium.

All DSA members and their personal assistants are welcome. Please note that only DSA Members will be allowed to vote on any issues on the night.

With reference to applications to join the DSA Committee only one application was received prior to the deadline. There has been one resignation from the Management Committee due to ill health so subject to suitability it is proposed that this applicant become part of the DSA Management committee subject to the agreement of DSA members at the AGM. Pen pictures of those who applied for election to the Management Committee as attached.

All members of the DSA Management Committee have stood down as per the current DSA Constitution and have stood for re-election apart from the one resignation. Due to the lack of applicants it is proposed that the current DSA committee be re-elected subject to the agreement of the DSA members at the AGM.

The DSA Constitution has been unchanged since the DSA was launched in 2012. The DSA has moved on since then and a number of proposed changes have been proposed and will be voted on by the members at the AGM.

Some of the proposed major changes include:

  • All members of the DSA Management Committee to undergo full DBS Checks.
  • The Management Committee shall comprise of 12 members who will be elected to the committee at the AGM.
  • In the event that less than 12 members are available to serve on the Management Committee, members may hold more than one post with the exception of the Chairperson. However, they will continue to have one vote only.
  • In the event that more than 12 members are willing to serve on the Management Committee, members may be elected by the Management Committee as co-opted members but with no voting rights.
  • Management Committee meetings now held monthly.
  • The term of office for each post will be two years.
  • In order to be elected to the Management committee, a member has to have been a DSA member for a full year before applying to join the Management Committee
  • Membership will run from 1st September to 31st August annually.  New memberships will be taken from September 1st.
  • Social Clause added to Constitution
  • Members of the Management Committee may be subject to disciplinary action or have their membership terminated if it is deemed that he or she has brought the SCAFC DSA into disrepute or that their continued membership is not in the interests of the SCAFC DSA.

All the above will be explained in full at the AGM and questions will be invited.

David Enstone Scoops inaugural DSA “Unsung Hero of the Year Award”

This Tuesday evening marked yet another milestone for us as a DSA. We as a committee we were able to present our inaugural “Unsung Hero of the Year Award- for exceptional support to disabled fans”.

Throughout the season premier league  players receive a number an awards & accolades for performances on the pitch. However, as we all know at every football there’s an army of unsung heroes that make match days special for Disabled Fans. -This is particularly true in Swansea, a family Club.

This is why as a committee we decided to honour  an unsung hero each season, with our Unsung Hero of the Year Award kindly sponsored by Ark Fencing .

Swansea AFC DSA is delighted to announce this years’ recipient as none other than Ticket Office Manager

David Enstone.
“Unsung Hero of the Year Award- for exceptional support to disabled fans”.

David pioneered the Award Winning online ticketing system that made the unprecedented move to allow disabled fans to purchase match day tickets online.

This is an issue that impacts on disabled people for match days in football, but is part of a wider ticketing problem in any form of live entertainment for disabled people.

As a DSA we recognise and have each experienced having to use jammed “dedicated disability phone lines” only to be stuck in a huge queue, that may only lead to disappointment.  The online ticketing system has provided a number of disabled fans to follow the Swans both Home & Away.- Which is greatly appreciated.

David has also shown his great support and dedication to improving experiences of disabled fans by regularly attending DSA meeting to discuss improvements and issues.

David understands that inclusion is a feeling, not a process! His approach (establishing an effective ticketing system), and attitude towards disabled fans, reflects this.

David and his team  have always been there for us and are happy to give up their time for us.
They have allowed us to use their database for disability promotions and are just generally all round good eggs.
This is due largely to the leadership of David who is an inspirational and innovative leader
The club is lucky to have such a man at the helm and this award is richly deserved.

We also announced our Premier League Lapel Pin Badges Prize to a DSA member who bid  £301.00, which is a fantastic donation to the DSA.

DSA Social Event -Tuesday 09th of May 2017 Announcement

  1. Regretfully,  We must inform  our members that the DSA Social Event planned for Tuesday 09 May has had to be cancelled.
This is for several reasons, not least out of respect to the first team squad, and our wish not to involve the first team players in any distraction for the rest of this season.
We know you maybe disappointed, but we hope you understand.

Premier League Pin Badge Auction

Bid for the chance to win this fantastic prize

As far as the auction for the lapel pin badges is concerned, this will continue, but by e-mail only (secswandsa@gmail.com).
We can confirm that we have received several bids.
The auction will remain open until 15.00 on Tuesday 09 May, at which time, whichever is the highest bid received, will win.
The winner will be notified personally, and their identity will only be made public, with their permission.
